The cannabinoid (CBD) industry is continuing to grow leaps and bounds over the past couple of years, but do you know the difference between CBD oil derived from hemp and CBD oil derived from cannabis?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the three main chemicals found in the cannabis and hemp plants. It’s growth in popularity in recent years has coincided with various scientific studies that have continued to find benefits for its application.

It’s believed CBD can be used for the treatment of various mental and physical illnesses, and possess beneficial properties such as antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, anticonvulsants and antipsychotics.

However, there are some key differences between the CBD oil derived from hemp and the CBD oil derived from cannabis.

The simple answer is that anything sold in a health store will be derived from the hemp plant and can be legally sold in most countries due to its THC content being lower than 0.3 percent - the property that gives you the “high” of cannabis.

CBD oil derived from cannabis, on the other hand, contains a much higher THC content and is normally the CBD oil sold by licensed cannabis producers.

What’s the difference between THC and CBD?

THC and CBD are the most prevalent cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, and both are found in cannabis and hemp plants but at much different levels of concentration. To qualify as hemp, a cannabis plant must legally have less than 0.3 percent THC. cannabis products, however, have significantly higher levels of THC.

Unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive. In fact, CBD is known to reduce the psychoactive effects of THC. Put simply, THC can cause the ‘high’ or euphoria associated with cannabis, as well as any other potential psychoactive side effects - CBD does not do this.

The differences between THC levels in a hemp-based CBD oil and a cannabis-based CBD oil play a large role in determining its legality in each country. Due to its higher THC content, CBD oil derived from the cannabis plant remains illegal in most countries and states, while CBD oil from the hemp plant is legal and available in most.

The medicinal differences

Despite the potential psychoactive side-effects, CBD oil derived from cannabis is believed to have important medicinal applications for patients with AIDS, chronic pain, and as a remedy for chemotherapy.

Meanwhile, studies have shown that hemp-derived CBD oil has medicinal benefits that can help inflammation, diabetes, cancer and more.

Not all CBD oils are the same quality

The extraction process of CBD oils is extremely complex especially once you add in popular features such as decarboxylation. Medicinal properties of the plant can easily be damaged, and low-quality machinery will result in a worse end product. Learning the process and using the right machinery is essential.

The aim is to extract CBD in its purest and most highly concentrated form, to create a high-quality product that is suitable for human consumption. There are two extraction methods for this - ethanol and C02.

Cannabis Oil Tech has engineered its very own set of unique Oil & Ethanol Recovery Systems specifically for the cannabis industry, which can produce CBD or THC oils with up to 99 percent - meaning a higher quality end product.
